Glycan bioinformatics at the IMMEI, University Clinic of Bonn

Computational analysis of glycan structures within the Mucosal Immunology Research Group (Tim Rollenske Lab).

Scanning electron micrograph of a bacterium’s glycan-covered surface.
Scanning electron micrograph of a bacterium’s glycan-covered surface.

Problem

Understanding immune recognition of glycans requires comparing three-dimensional glycan structures at scale, which is difficult with manual structural inspection.

Approach

Fetched PDB glycan structures, performed 3D alignments, and generated multidimensional scaling (MDS) plots for similarity visualization, alongside ELISA assays for protein quantification and immune profiling.

Result

Established a computational workflow for glycan similarity analysis and gained hands-on mucosal immunology experience bridging dry- and wet-lab methods.
